Covered Bond Investor LLC
Mercy Jiménez earned her MBA degree from the Harvard Business School. Since then, she has worked for over 20 years in many corners of the financial services world-both within the U.S. and internationally—including primary and secondary mortgage markets.
Before co-founding the online publication Covered Bond Investor™ (www.coveredbondinvestor.com), Ms. Jiménez held management positions at Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase, and Fannie Mae. Her experience spans new business development, corporate development, business strategy, lender relationship management, securities trust compliance, and risk management.
The assignment that influenced her most was leading a national mortgage business center that engaged with nearly 2,000 large regional and smaller financial institutions. She quickly became impressed by the “stick to the fundamentals” approach of so many of those lesser-known, quality lenders—and surprised that their values seemed underappreciated by investors and the market.
That was before the meltdown. “The game has changed,” Ms. Jiménez says. “Today’s financial heroes are—or should be—the lenders that didn’t play fast and loose or overextend themselves.”
This perspective has contributed to her current focus on covered bonds as a way to help reform debt financing while spotlighting quality lenders. “I am now an advocate for covered bonds because good borrowers, good assets, and good lenders are the backbone of this security structure.”
One of the few Latinas to reach senior management in U.S. financing, Ms. Jiménez has been featured by Hispanic Business Magazine as one of 25 “Elite Hispanic Women” in corporate America. She has served on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals and the Atlantic Council, and as a trustee of the National Building Museum in Washington, DC.
