Sydney-based law firm prepares for possible regulatory change

Although covered bonds are not currently allowed as a form of funding for Australian banks, the Henry Davis York law firm is preparing itself for a possible change in this situation.  The text below is from a public announcement (Nov. 25) by the firm.

In response to an emerging interest from the banking industry, rating agencies and regulators and clients, Sydney-based law firm, Henry Davis York (HDY), has formed Australia's first specialist covered bonds team.

Jerry MarlattJerry MarlattJerry Marlatt has moved to the Morrison & Foerster law firm from Clifford Chance, according to an announcement today (July 9).

Marlatt is considered among the lawyers who have helped pioneer covered bonds in North America.  He is credited with helping to engineer the first issuance of covered bonds in U.S. history (by Washington Mutual).

Thacher Proffitt Structured Finance Group Moves to Sonnenschein

Dissolution of Thacher law firm after 160 years

According to a public statement from Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP, the law firm is picking up what appears to be substantially the entire Structured Finance Group of  Thacher Proffitt & Wood LLP, along with three other practice groups.   The move is expected to commence as of January 1, 2009.   Management of the Thacher firm reportedly announced plans to dissolve.

118-year-old San Francisco-based law firm Heller Ehrman LLP voted to dssolve, leaving many hundreds of lawyers and staff in multiple offices to seek employment elsewhere.

Just a couple of months ago, on August 14, the firm announced formation of a covered bonds practice group. At that time, the firm’s press release noted that Heller Ehrman “has been involved in the issuance of covered bonds by Washington Mutual, one of the two banks that have been issued covered bonds.”
