    On the day before last month's landmark hearing on covered bonds by the U.S. House of Representatives' Committee on Financial Services, Congressman Scott Garrett (R-NJ) held a telephone press conference.  Accompanying him were Tim Skeet, head of covered bonds at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, and banking expert Bert Ely of the Ely & Company consulting firm.  Each of the three offered some initial remarks on covered bonds for the U.S. before answering questions from the news media.

    Unione di Banche Italiane SCPA (UBI Banca) priced a ten-year, €1 billion covered bond under Italy's covered bonds law (Obbligazioni Bancarie Garantite) in early December.  This slideshow dated November/December 2009 comprised the bank's Investor Presentation.

    The series of 47 slides provide detailed information about the bank, the Italian mortgage market, UBI Banca's mortgage business and its covered bond program — including a diagram of the program's structure and specifics on its cover pool.
